Unilever donates $500,000 to Haiti earthquake victims

15/01/2010 : Unilever donates $500,000 to United Nations World Food Programme for relief aid to Haiti earthquake victims.

Unilever today announced a $500,000 monetary donation to the victims of Tuesday’s devastating earthquake in Haiti, through its global partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

In addition to its monetary donation, Unilever is encouraging its employees worldwide to contribute to disaster relief efforts and is preparing product donations to help meet the needs of those affected by the earthquake.

"In the aftermath of this disaster, we hope that the global outreach and support to Haiti will provide relief quickly for those who have been so deeply impacted," said Paul Polman, Chief Executive Officer of Unilever. "Our partnership with WFP builds on a long tradition of Unilever as a responsible company, firmly rooted in local communities all around the world."

"Make no mistake, every contribution will save lives. Unilever’s quick action will make a true difference to the Haitian people," said Josette Sheeran, Executive Director, World Food Programme.

Unilever is deeply connected to the affected area, with employees, a corporate office and two factories in neighboring Dominican Republic – all employees have been accounted for and are safe.

Unilever continues to make global humanitarian efforts a top priority and has demonstrated its commitment in the past by assisting in major relief efforts, such as those following the tsunami in Indonesia (2004) and Hurricane Katrina in the U.S (2005).
